Dog tags were primarily used as identification of soldiers, but in recent years it has become an item that is associated with military, toughness, and races. It is made of metal and can be electroplated in different colors. They can be the perfect race medals for your race.

Homeboy Industries is a Los Angeles-based program that provides hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community. Its 9th annual Homeboy 5k raised important necessary funds to support various programs. For this race the organizers decided on the iconic dog tags as race medals for the finishers.

The Design

The design features the Homeboy Industries logo with a snapshot of Los Angeles skyline, and on the back side is a quote from its founder Father Greg Boyle. Since the dog tag area is smaller than a traditional medal, we kept the color simple and went with a all metal look. Since there will be special medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers. We used different metal finishes of the same design to distinguish the winners from the finishers. The result was 4 distinctive but consistent set of medals. By the way, this is a creative and inexpensive way to create both winner and finisher medals from one design!

The Production

After the initial virtual proofs were approved, the mold is created then a sample medal is created. Did you know we can electroplate the beaded necklace to different colors? As a matter of fact, our production team feels that if the beaded necklace this way makes each version of the medal stands out even more. The medal and beaded necklace is electroplated than polished to finish things off. The colors that were finally decided were – 1st place winner gets shiny gold, 2nd place gets shiny silver, and 3rd place is antique red bronze. All finishers get a sleek matte silver dog tag.

More than 2,800 from the community got together on a cool September morning, and together they raised more than $300,000 towards the different programs that benefit the very same community the race was held.
